The Sand Flats Recreation Area (SFLA) is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Utah’s Grand County. It is located just a few miles from downtown Moab and is up on a higher elevation so it overlooks the town lights at night. We stayed here on one of our visits to Moab.
SFLA Trails
The SFLA is best known for its famous Slickrock and Porcupine Rim mountain biking trails which are world famous.
The SFLA also has 30 miles of 4×4 trails, including Fins and Things and Hell’s Revenge trails which attract people from all over the world to play on the slickrock domes.
Sand Flats Recreation Area Campground
The Sand Flats Recreation Area has dry camping spots available for tents and RVs.
The whole area has 120 campsites that are first-come, first served. Reservations are not accepted.
The campsites are divided among nine different loops lettered A through H and Juniper.
Your best bets for campsites that will fit RVs are in campground loops A, B, E, and Juniper.
Of the 120 campsites in the Sand Flats Recreation Area, approximately 35-40 can fit RVs.
According to the SFLA, no campsites are available that fit RVs over 40 feet long.
However, we were able to fit our 27 foot long Airstream and 22 foot long pickup truck together in one campsite with no problems, so there may be some wiggle room with these calculations.
We camped in Loop B (Bobcat) in our 27-foot Airstream travel trailer and had plenty of room for our Airstream and our full-length F-350 pickup truck.
Loop B is directly across from the very popular Slickrock mountain bike trail parking lot.
We backed up to some tall slickrock domes that provided an excellent morning coffee spot.
The cost per campsite in September 2018 was $15 per night.
One bonus of the Sand Flats Recreation Area is that we went to sleep to the sound of howling coyotes that must not have been too far from our campsite.
Sand Flats Recreation Area Campground Amenities
There are no hookups at the Sand Flats Recreation Area campsite.
You must bring in all the water and power you need (either via generator, solar power, battery setup, or some combination).
There are no water sources available, so be sure to bring whatever water you need with you.
We used our solar panel in combination with a generator for electricity.
The intense Moab sun kept our solar panel humming during the day. Other campers were doing the same thing, as evidenced by this travel trailer’s two solar panels.
Generators are permitted between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM at the Sand Flats Recreation Area campground.
Each campsite in Loop B has a picnic table and metal fire ring.
There are vault toilets available, but these do not have water.
However, in loop B, there was a “loo with a view” in this scenic open-air pit toilet.
There is a dumpster in the parking lot across the street for the Slickrock mountain bike trail.

Final Thoughts
The SFLA campground is a good choice for anyone who wants to bike or ATV in the Sand Flats Recreation Area. The campsites are spacious and conveniently located. Even though there aren’t any hookups, having a vault toilet available makes the camping experience easier.
