We were not able to get a reservation at one of the campgrounds in Custer State Park, but ended up staying at Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground in Custer, SD, located about two miles from the entrance to Custer State Park on Highway 16A.
It is conveniently located about a mile and a half from the cute mountain town of Custer, South Dakota.
We were very happy with our stay there.

Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground has RV campsites, cabins, and tent camping sites.
Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground Amenities
The campground has two RV camping sections.
One area has electricity only, while the other RV camping area has full hookups.
This worked well for us since we were there for a week and had full hookups, with water, electricity, sewer, and even cable TV.
If we had stayed at Custer State Park, we would have had to move our Airstream every few days to dump the tanks and fill up with water.
Having full hookups just two miles outside the park worked really well for us.
If you’re interested in watching cable TV, the campground office has cable boxes available in the campground office to use for free.
Simply connect it to your TV and you’ll get cable TV.
We don’t usually watch TV while camping, but one day it rained most of the day, so being able to loaf around watching TV was a bonus.
The campground also has a bathhouse with showers and toilets.
Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground also has laundry facilities, which we used during our stay.
In August 2018, each load of laundry was $2 for the washing machine and $2 for the dryer.
The campground office has change for the quarters in the laundry machines.
Borders US National Forest Land
Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground is surrounded by US National Forest Land.
The land around the campground has miles and miles of off-roading trails, for which many outfitters in the town of Custer provide rental opportunities for off-road vehicles.
There are trails directly from the campground itself.
If you bring your own off-road motorcycle or vehicle, you can ride from your campsite.
While we visited, there were several sets of campers who had brought their own off-road vehicles and were staying for three weeks while they explored the trails.
We brought a dirt-bike motorcycle and spent hours exploring the 100s of miles in the area.
Final Thoughts on Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground
We enjoyed our stay at this campground. It was clean, conveniently located near Custer State Park, and had nice trees between campsites.
We would stay here again.
